Walking the parks to help others with MS in Jane Tomlinson challenge

A man who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis seven years ago is determined to help others with the condition in a series of charity walks.

Kahn Johnson, 39, is taking the Jane Tomlinson National Park Challenge, which will see him complete walks in the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District.

Journalist Mr Johnson, of Hollingthorpe Lane, Hall Green, has been told by doctors he is likely to need a wheelchair within the next decade for his condition.

He said he was determined to take up the challenge while he still can to raise cash for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Mr Johnson, whose illness often leaves him with severe pains in his legs, said: “I am really looking forward to the walks because the countryside and landscapes are stunning but I know my legs will hurt like hell afterwards.

“Still, no pain no gain and it’s something I have to do to raise money for charity. It will be quite an effort but it will be worth it.”

Profits from the challenge will go to the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, the legacy of the late fundraiser who completed a series of tough endurance feats despite suffering from incurable cancer.

Walkers are also encouraged to raise funds for a charity of their choice.

Mr Johnson, a page designer with Bradford’s Telegraph and Argus newspaper, will enter the  Triple Trekker challenge with his wife Izzy.

The couple will be accompanied by their two dogs.

Mr Johnson said: “Three years ago I ran the Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k and the London 10k back to back but there’s no way my legs would let me run like that now.

“So when I read about the launch of the National Park Challenge it seemed a good alternative.”

The Triple Trekker Challenge is made up of three walks ranging from 12 to 14 miles in the Peak District on Sunday April  28, the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday, August 18 and the Lake District on Sunday September 8.
